This bright and brooding red blend shows the true potential of the Maule and Itata valleys.
Bright yet brooding. Up front, it is all fresh and expressive red berries. Then, on the palate, you find touches of herbs and cocoa. It finishes with bright cherry and vivacity.
It has the backbone for a pairing with grilled meats from lamb to steaks, but would shine with slow-cooked short ribs.
The 2017 Facundo was produced with 45% Carignan from Maule, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon from Itata, 15% Cabernet Franc from Colchagua and 5% Petit Verdot from Itata. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in neutral barrels for 26 months. This is an unusual blend that comes through as perfumed and spicy, a little herbal with a smoky touch and quite complex. The wine has abundant, fine-grained, slightly rustic tannins with moderate acidity. 6,582 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2021.Wine Advocate August 2021
