Ed Lehrman has been a wine guy from as far back as he can remember. While at Duke University, Ed had already started drinking and collecting wine as a hobby, using the two bottom drawers of his dormitory clothes bureau to properly store his small collection on its side.
After graduation in 1986, Ed moved to Manhattan and immediately went to work for New York’s premier wine shop, Sherry-Lehmann. After a brief stint at New York area wholesaler Lauber Imports, Ed headed to UCLA where he earned his MBA before moving to San Francisco to work as Kendall-Jackson Winery’s first Marketing Manager. Ed eventually left K-J to become the U.S. Marketing Manager for Seagram Classics, where he oversaw all marketing for Champagne Mumm, Barton et Guestier, and Castello d’Albola wines.
In 1994, Ed left Seagram to start his own business, Passport Wine Club. Passport Wine Club quickly became the U.S.’s premier mail order company for international wine selections and wine-of-the-month clubs. In 1999, Ed sold the company to Geerlings & Wade Inc., the largest direct marketer of wine in the U.S.
Over time, Ed & Nick became good friends as well as respected business associates. Soon after the sale of Passport Wine Club, Ed joined Nick on a trip to South America that would change their lives. After visiting many wineries and tasting many wines from the just-completed 1999 harvest, Ed & Nick came to the conclusion that they simply had to seize the opportunity to bring their wine discoveries to the U.S. by forming a wine importing and national sales & marketing company, Vine Connections.
Vine Connections’ Argentine wines (BenMarco, Gusto Vita, Luca, mapema, Susana Balbo, Tikal) have earned high praise from all the major U.S. wine and food publications. Vine Connections continues to pursue other small, exciting wine producers in areas as diverse as New Zealand, Mexico and even Japan (Sake).
